What difference will the MAA make?
The MAA sets outcome targets for 2014 against which the impact of the MAA will be measured. These focus particularly on closing the performance gap between North Kent and the South East average, for instance by reducing the number of people claiming out of work benefits, raising the proportion of residents with skills at NVQ level 2 or above, raising economic productivity and reducing carbon emissions per head of population.
But like any kind of Agreement, a lot of this is about processes to bring about longer term change. Over time, we hope to see:-
For residents:
-
Increased housing choice.
-
Better services to unemployed people: not being passed from pillar to post but wherever someone starts their ‘journey’ one person will guide them through the process to the right training or job opportunity.
-
Better opportunities for people to access training to improve their skills and employability both inside and outside their workplace.
-
Better quality jobs nearer to home, reducing the need to commute to London or elsewhere in the region to find higher paid work.
-
Raised aspirations, particularly amongst young people, about the value of and opportunities arising from higher education.
-
An improving environment with better access to ‘green’ spaces and better quality public realm particularly in town centres.
-
Increased satisfaction with the area where they live, civic pride and sense of place.
For businesses:
-
Increased confidence in North Kent as a place to invest.
-
Better response from colleges and training providers to deliver the training courses that businesses want for their workforces.
-
Better trained local workforce, enabling easier recruitment and retention of people with the right skills.
-
More certainty about key developments and infrastructure that affect decisions about business location, and an improved choice of good quality premises to help business expansion.
-
More consistency in services and support from partner local authorities.
