What does the North Kent MAA cover?
North Kent partners published a Prospectus at the 2008 Thames Gateway Forum, setting out the proposed scope and content of the MAA. This was developed into a full MAA submission made in June 2009. Following clearance by Government Departments, the Summary Agreement was signed at a ceremony in Dartford on 9th September 2009.
The main focus of the North Kent MAA is to make the delivery of Thames Gateway ambitions more certain and robust:
- By raising the skills, qualifications and economic activity levels of the resident population to compete for higher value jobs;
- By securing the infrastructure necessary for development to be sustainable;
- By focusing action to maintain the supply of new housing and to restore momentum to housing markets; and
- By strengthening partnership working and leadership across all sectors to ensure that opportunities for adding value through collaboration are maximised.
The North Kent MAA therefore covers four main themes and six outcome objectives:
Investment and funding mechanisms
Skills & Employability
-
More customer-focused support for people not in work to access training, improve skills and gain employment
-
Making training provision more responsive to employers’ needs, and investing in the skills needed to grow and “future proof” the North Kent economy.
Transport & Connectivity
Housing & Planning
Under each of these themes and outcomes we have developed a number of proposals for action and ‘asks’ of Government. These include several areas where further work will be done jointly with Government to look at how policies, funding mechanisms and other rules might be flexed to help achieve our objectives.
As well as the main themes shown above, we have been looking at other areas where closer collaboration at the sub-regional level might add value and which might result in further proposals for inclusion in a ‘refresh’ of the MAA in future. These include support for innovation and enterprise, the Thames Gateway Eco Region and culture.
