These striking new pictures from pioneering architect Ken Yeang reveal the emerging masterplan for Chatham Waterfront - one of the most important regeneration sites in the Thames Gateway.

One image is Yeang’s vision of ‘Pentagon Square’ in what will be the retail heart of the regenerated City of Medway.

The second artist’s impression shows the waterfront promenade that will lead people through a world-class cultural quarter centred on a £70m arts and entertainment venue to be called The Reach.

The images are the latest to emerge from the Yeang masterplan, which shows a transformed Chatham Waterfront framed by two stunning 20-storey residential towers, one of which may include a major hotel.

Between the towers - along a ‘linear plaza’ - are a series of striking three to eight storey buildings that include a theatre, arts and entertainment venues, shops, restaurants, bars, a community centre and conference facilities.

All this is linked by a network of walkways that lead to the waterfront and link it to two other key regeneration zones: The Brook and Station Gateway, which are being master-planned by McCreanor Lavington and Urban Initiatives respectively.

The seven-hectare Chatham Waterfront site is Yeang’s first major Thames Gateway project.

Medway Council’s regeneration arm, Medway Renaissance, appointed him to prepare the masterplan. After his first site-visit, he declared: “I’m exhilarated by its potential. We must optimise the waterfront to create something that is four things: a beautiful place to be, a unique destination, a stunning place to look at, a stunning place to look out from.”

Mark Bradbury, Head of Chatham Development at Medway Renaissance, said:

“These new images really capture the fantastic opportunity the waterfront offers to add to Chatham’s range of Shops, homes and cultural facilities in a fantastic setting between a revitalised city centre park and the waterfront. We are now working closely with development partners to bring these plans to fruition at the earliest opportunity.’’

Architect Sir Terry Farrell, Medway’s Design Champion, said: “City regeneration is increasingly about the rediscovery of waterfronts. Much of Medway’s waterfronts is hidden and inaccessible, yet it has huge potential. So doing something distinctive, striking and highly visible on this key waterfront site is the right big move.”

Dr Yeang has designed a series of celebrated tall, energy-efficient buildings. He’s called some of them ‘bioclimatic skyscrapers’.

Born in Malaysia, he was educated in England and received a doctorate in ecological design from Cambridge University. He has offices in London, Beijing and Kuala Lumpur.

His projects include: Lakeside Thurrock Masterplan, Great Ormond Street Hospital Extension, the IBM HQ (Malaysia) and the New National Library of Singapore.
