The Chatham Vines Art Award
Yeang's Vision For Chatham
Medway Renaissance is pleased to invite early career artists to apply to the Chatham Vines Public Art Award 2007. This new award is to support emerging artists who have lived, worked or studied in Medway to create a new piece of work for Chatham.
Background
Medway is undergoing major regeneration and aims to be a city of Culture, Learning, Tourism and Enterprise. Chatham will be the cultural and civic heart of this new city, a city of 300,000 people by 2026
Artists can reflect on this, celebrating the people and place, its distinctiveness and potential.
You may or may not have a site in mind. Consider landmarks, open spaces, meeting points or transient places. The final location will be agreed with Medway Council once an artist is chosen.
Permanent, ephemera, event based and disciplined works will be considered.
Budget and Timescale
£5,000 (Includes materials)
Reasonable installation costs will be met by Medway Council (These costs are additional to the commission fee)
Artists short listed February 2007
Winner announced March 2007
Work to be completed and installed by September 2007
Commission Brief
A new public art commission for Chatham that reflects the changing face of Medway
Open submission for an early career artist
Must be connected to Medway through study, work, living
Work must be permanent with a life span of 5 years/or that leaves a permanent legacy
Site within Chatham to be discussed
Business support/professional development advise will be provided courtesy of UCCA
How to apply:
Artist CV with evidence of work and track record
Please supply a CD of at least 3 images and or website address illustrating your work
Completed application form
Two referees
If short-listed you will receive a small fee to work up an idea for interview with evidence of budget

Criteria for applicant
Short listed applicants will be selected by a representative panel including:

John Newling, Artist, Writer and Professor of Installation Art at Nottingham Trent University
Diane Taylor, Head of School for University College of the Creative Arts, Rochester, Kent
Paula Groves, Sculptor
Laura Knight/Louise Francis of FrancisKnight Arts Consultants
Dahlia Halpern, New Arts Centre, Chatham
Applications will be judged on:
The quality of the artists previous work and the potential quality of the commissioned work
The expected impact of a commission on the artist’s creative development/career
The quality of the information/material supplied
Additional criteria
Artists must have either lived, worked or studied in Medway. Applications from fulltime students will not be considered. Applications from part time postgraduate students will be accepted.
